I'd suggest picking up one game from every era when you can just to get a feel for which approach suits you best!My recommendations for that, based on community opinion rather than experience since, as said, I'm new too:Sonic Mania for the classic 2D platformer approachAdventure 1 in its ORIGINAL, non-DX form for the adventure approachIf you want to get the most fun and enjoyment out of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3&K, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Adventure 2, I think I know how.With the Genesis Sonic games ( 1, 2, 3&K, and CD), I'd recommend reading the Japanese manuals to understand the story of those games. Someone recommending you play exclusively retro styled sidescrollers and nothing else isn't 'wrong' to do so, but their perspective is unquestionably partial. Sonic has gone through at least three distinct periods, essentially the 90's, 00's, and 10's that all have their own unique flavor to them.

Fortunately, people have decided to fix the broken content with mods (at least for the Steam/PC versions of those two games). That version depends on the legally purchased ROM to function and it has loads of new content along with mod support, so it's the best version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles to date.For Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, the ports did break a lot of things in the game. As for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, purchase the ROM on Steam and download Sonic 3 A.I.R.
(In the case of the latter, I use the configure option of the mod loader and set the disable upgrade models for Gamma as "False", since they look great on him.)As for Sonic Adventure 2, since the game doesn't have a dedicated series of mods that restore it to its former Dreamcast aesthetic, I'll reply to this comment separately on what mods are essential for getting the most enjoyment out of that game because there's a lot of them that I use, and you also have to experiment with the order loading through the mod loader in order to not crash the game. Two optional mods I play with include No Animal Parts and Disable Upgrade Models. After that, the mods I consider essential include Fixes, Adds, and Beta Restores, Sonic Adventure Retranslated, AutoDemo Windy Valley, JP Text Restoration, and Active Mouths. (However, his video does contain spoilers for both games, so I'll give you the details on what mods to download from here.) For Sonic Adventure, you first have to install the SADX Mod Installer for the PC port, which restores the game to its beautiful Dreamcast glory.
